Almost everyone has heard some portion of the story relating to the last czar, his family and particularly the most famous child, Grand Duchess Anastasia. Certainly almost all young people have seen the animated film entitled "Anastasia".
Hardly anyone knows that the remains, which were found in modern times, of this doomed family were interred in a common urn in an area of the Peter and Paul Cathedral.
So now, in addition to the individual tombs of all the Romanov czars (except Peter III), one can see the special area set aside to memorialize the family of Nicholas II.
To make this a much more interesting visit I would suggest anyone of a number of fine books which tell the story of this royal family and how their Association the evil Rasputin led to their demise. One such book, written by Robert Massie, is entitled "The Last Romanovs". As all of his books are, it is a fascinating read.
Be sure to include the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Peter and Paul Cathedral on your list of visits when touring St. Petersburg. I almost always include it in the itinerary for clients of RussianTourGuide.com and it is on the RussianTourGuide.com two – day cruise ship group shore excursion.
