Planning  Russian Holidays – Art Lovers

There was a time when "Planning a Russian Holiday" would have been unthinkable. Now is not only thinkable it is highly desirable.

If you look at the adverts for various countries around the world they all say they have something for everybody. That is not always true. I really believe, however, it is true in Russia. While we will not discuss some of the more athletic activities, like cross country skiing or mountain climbing, we will discuss sights which would appeal to an art lover on a Russian holiday.

If you love art a Russian holiday would be a dream come true. Take your pick between St. Petersburg and Moscow. Better yet, visit both. Here are but a few of the art museums which would rival the Louvre or the National Gallery.

Moscow portion of Russian holidays

Tretyakov gallery –  home to one of the largest collections of art by Russian artists

  • Russian art of the 20th century, modern art and temporary exhibitions – Krymsky Val
  • Pre 20th Century Russian Art – Lavrushinsky Lane

  • Tretyakov Gallery - Appatition of the Messiah- Ivanov

State Pushkin Museum of Fine Art

Ground Floor – Ancient Egypt, ancient civilizations, European painting from thirteenth to eighteenth century

First Floor – Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, the Middle Ages, the art of Italy, Spain and France from the seventeenth to the early nineteenth century

Gallery of Art from the countries of Western Europe and America of the 19th and 20th centuries (separate facility)

Department of Private Collections (separate facility)

  • The Moscow Museum of Modern Art
  • Works of art from the first decades of the 20th century

St. Petersburg portion of your Russian holiday

  • The State Hermitage Museum - One of the largest collections of art in the world. During the Siege of Leningrad 8 train loads of art treasure were packed for evacuation from the city.Haystack at Giverny - Monet - Hermitage Museum

  • The Russian Museum – The St. Petersburg equivalent of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Russian art.

  • The Erarta Museum of Modern Art – this is the most modern and technologically advanced museum I have ever seen. You can see more about this amazing museum at our Facebook page Erarta Museum

These six art museums in St. Petersburg and Moscow could easily engage an art lover for many weeks.  "Russian Holidays" are holidays we should rank right up with a visit to London, Rome or Paris.

We can provide your Russian holiday and even the cruise on board CMV Marco Polo to get you there in style.
